Life Behind Bars

I’d been thinking about starting a Substack for a long time, but never actually got up the guts to try. But now, with the world on fire and democracy dying, the possibility of failing —of my ego getting a little bruised— doesn’t seem quite so daunting.

I don’t mean to be flip. The world IS terrifying right now, which is all the more reason to find silly/good/hopeful stories. I’ve kept a sort of journal of my many (many!) years working behind bars in NYC, so I plan to gallop down memory lane and haul out a few tales from the past when the present feels too hard to bear. I’ll try to post once a week. The stories are true (or as true as memory can be). Some of the names have been changed to protect the stupid, irritating, and/or inebriated.
